Speaker Series

Speaker: Helena Medeiros

Assistant Research Professor at the University of Southern California
Director of Diagnosis of Genetic Research Studies

Michele Pato could not attend, so sent her research assistant, Helena Medeiros, in her place.

Michele T. Pato, MD has an extensive background in research of psychiatric disorders (Schizophrenia, Bipolar illness, OCD and PTSD), both genetic and clinical, and has also worked in numerous capacities for research and education through academic appointments at 6 major universities.

Along with her lifetime collaborator, and husband, Carlos N. Pato, M.D., PhD they have built the Genomic Psychiatry Cohort (GPC) at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. This study includes a total of 60,000 participants. They will be able to track their histories, follow their families, and begin to attempt to predict who is at risk and see how that genetic risk, combined with non-genetic (environmental and other) variables, may determine onset and course of illness.  Ultimately they hope to improve treatment both by earlier detection and better medication and therapy choices.

  • Following the talk, people interested will have the opportunity to enroll in the genetic study. Details will be provided. This is completely voluntary.
